It was a simpler time

Below is SCA’s very first annual treasurer’s report, for the year 1983. Community volunteers had just come together in 1982 to save the canal from being filled in by the state. By the end of 1983, after a year of activity, the Association had opened its own bank account and begun the task of promoting the canal to the area’s leading businesses to solicit their support. This was an expensive and exciting step for the fledgling group, taken because they knew SCA’s success would depend in the long run on wide community support.

Here is 1983’s financial report in its entirety. Take notice of the contrast to the 2003 report by clicking here. When the elderly treasurer who found it brought it to Betsy Daley this February, her comment was “Things were a lot simpler back then! We have grown a great deal. ”
