The Schuylkill Canal Weir Channel
and Schuylkill River Bank Stabilization
SCA, partnering with the Delaware Riverkeeper Network and Upper Providence
Township, will be coordinating the stabilization of the weir channel at
the confluence to the Schuylkill River this spring. Thanks to a mini-grant
from the Partnership of the Delaware Estuary, with funding being provided
by the Delaware Estuary Program and the Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA), SCA will be restoring the riparian buffer at this popular fishing
point. The Delaware Riverkeeper Network will provide their expertise and
Upper Providence Township will be providing the heavy equipment and labor
for placing bioengineering fabric that will stabilize the bank. SCA will
provide the volunteer labor force for planting native species of trees,
shrubs, and herbaceous and aquatic plugs along a 50-foot riparian area
on the river’s bank.
If you would like to get involved in this project, contact SCA at 610-917-0021
with your interest and desire to help out.

Project Updates
Public handicap-accessible restrooms have been installed
in the garage at Lock 60. Thanks to the generosity of various local private
foundations and a state DCED grant, the restrooms were constructed throughout
the winter. The Bethany Group Inc., from Valley Forge, started the work
in October with the anticipated completion date of mid-December. But due
to the harsh winter conditions and some delays in delivery of materials,
the work was not completed until January. An occupancy permit has been
issued by Upper Providence Township allowing use of the restrooms by the
general public. They will be open to the general public during SCA’s
scheduled events.

special thanks goes out to the UPT Public Works for all of their help!

It began with marking out the floor and putting in the foundation.
The old windows were taken out and boarded up. |
 |
Once the doors replaced the old windows, work on the interior space
was completed rather quickly. It took two to put the
tile on the walls. |
 |
The finished interior space – each water closet has automatic
flushing units to conserve water as well as the faucets in each sink. |
 |
 |
| The finished exterior of the building and the established
handicapped parking area as it is today. Once the nicer weather arrives,
Don Frisco, a Board member and dedicated volunteer, will be coordinating
the painting of the exterior surface with an Eagle Scout candidate.
The parking area will also be paved and the area landscaped to provide
a more pleasing appearance. The next phase of the project will be
to construct an ADA-compliant boardwalk from the restrooms to the
Locktender’s House providing handicapped access to the house.
