The Schuylkill River Greenway Association
presents the fifth annual

Schuylkill River Sojourn 2003

During the week of May 31st thru June 6th a group of hearty souls will float, paddle and work hard as they travel down the Schuylkill River from Schuylkill Haven to Philadelphia. For information and registration materials for this year’s sojourn contact SRGA at www.schuylkillriver.org.

As the sojourners pass through the river communities they will stop overnight in various locations. Lock 60, once again, is a landing site for the river travelers during their journey. SCA provides a clean and comfortable lawn for our guests to spend the night.

The Schuylkill Canal Association will host the sojourners on Wednesday, June 4th into Thursday, June 5th. Our guests will arrive at Lock 60 at about 4 PM on Wednesday afternoon, spend the night camping out at Lock 60 and leave by
9 AM on Thursday morning.

Dinner will be prepared and served promptly at 6 PM by Otterbein United Methodist Church at St. Mike’s Park on Wednesday evening. All are welcome and invited to come.

For $10 per person, you can sit down to a delicious PA Dutch favorite – pork and sauerkraut. In addition, some foods prepared by some of the ethnic groups from the Phoenixville area will be offered.

The program for the evening will touch on the music and dance of these various ethnic groups by providing demonstrations on Irish step dancing and Slavic dance. To round the night out an American square dance will be held.

If you are an early riser, come back on Thursday morning, June 5th, for breakfast at 7 AM and watch as the sojourners take off for the next stretch of the trip. They will start on the canal, paddle to the end in Port Providence to portage to the river.
It’s a wonderful sight to see!

We always take pleasure in providing our beautiful site for others to enjoy and learn about. And we appreciate all the support we receive from the local community. If you would like to help out while our guests are in town there are many opportunities available. Please give SCA a call at 610-917-0021 or email us at schuylkillcanal@mindspring.com if you can volunteer some time.
