Upcoming Events
Put these dates on your calendar!
Sunday, October 20th - Locktender's Open House
- 1 to 4 PM.
A Fall Foliage Hike is planned and will start at 1 PM at Lock 60. Bob
Elmer, president of PICTA, will guide you along the trails and point out
the fall foliage as you walk. The Locktender's House will be open to visit.
Dave Williams, a SCA Board member, will be in the house to greet you and
tell you a little bit about the history of the navigation system and what
SCA is up to. Light refreshments will be served.
Saturday, October 26th - Fall Cleanup Day &
Pumpkin Painting Contest - 10 AM to 4 PM.
Come out and volunteer some time to help clean up the Lock 60 area and
trails along the canal & river. And bring your kids or grandkids and
have them paint a pumpkin for the upcoming All Hallows Eve. If you are
able to help, which we hope you are, meet at Lock 60 at 10 AM to join
in with a crew of workers. Or come whenever you can and pitch in where
needed. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Be sure to wear gloves
and have a willingness to get dirty! Hope to see you there. And kids -
be sure to bring your creative, artistic ideas for those pumpkins. Paints
and pumpkins will be set up on the Locktender's House porch. If you plan
to be with us over lunch and/or participate in the pumpkin painting, please
give us a call so we can get a count.
Thursday, November 7th - Lock 60 Restoration
Groundbreaking - 2 PM (rain or shine).
That's right folks - the Lock 60 Restoration is about to officially begin!
The construction for the restoration of Lock 60 is scheduled to begin
in January 2003 - the plans are in PennDOT's hands and a contractor will
be chosen by the end of this year. To celebrate, SCA will conduct an official
groundbreaking to keep the ball rolling. Federal, state and local government
officials, funders and sponsors will be invited and asked to put the shovel
to the dirt to get the project started. A small reception will be held
afterwards in the Locktender's House. Once all the work is completed,
by January 2004, SCA will have an official ribbon cutting with festivities
and a celebration as a boat "locks through" the restored lock
chamber for the first time in over 80 years. Keep your eyes on the newspaper
as this project progresses.
Sunday, November 17th, Locktender's Open House
- 1 to 4 PM.
A Fossil Find and Nature Walk will be happening on this particular Sunday.
Meet at Lock 60 at 1 PM and go for a hike along the ravine and river trials
all the while looking down underfoot for fossils that have been there
for centuries. The Locktender's House will be open to visit during this
time. One of our SCA volunteers will be available to talk to you about
the history of the navigation system and let you know how SCA is progressing.
Light refreshments will be served.
Saturday, December 14th, Holiday Luminaria - 6:30
to 9:00 PM.
Please join SCA as we celebrate the holiday season with our annual candle
vigil. SCA lines the towpath from the Rt. 29 Bridge all the way to the
lock area, surrounding the lock, and up to the Locktender's House with
hundreds of luminary candles. It is a beautiful sight to see and one that
leaves you in awe from the reflection of candlelight upon the canal waterway.
Inside the Locktender's House the warmth of a roaring fire that is very
welcoming on a chilly winter night greets our visitors. Musicians provide
a festive atmosphere playing holiday music and the house is decorated
in simple holiday d≥cor to reflect the workingman's lifestyle. Refreshments
are served by the SCA Board of Directors as good wishes for a safe and
happy holiday season are expressed and spread around! If it rains the
entire event is cancelled.
