Usually on a pleasant afternoon with the sun shining, members of the Schuylkill Canal Association and the Phoenix Iron Canal & Trail Association welcome our friends and neighbors to Lock 60. On the third Sunday of each month, except June and December, the Locktender’s House is open to visitors between 1 and 4 PM. SCA invites all to participate with the outdoor enthusiasts, historians, musicians, and members of both organizations who provide a little entertainment, education, and recreation during our various events.

At other times throughout the year we encourage regional non-profits to take advantage of our beautiful site. We have a star gazing twice a year, the Schuylkill River Sojourn paddles through town in June and we offer assistance to the local school districts and youth organizations as a safe and convenient community service area. We hold our annual Canal Day celebration at the end of June and the beautiful Holiday Luminaria in mid-December.

Please plan to attend our exciting events with your whole family. The following is the current calendar of events for 2002:

Sunday, September 15, 2002 – SCA Locktender’s Open House, 1 to 5 PM
Join SCA for our annual Music Festival coordinated by local musician, Jeff Dominick. Local bands and groups will perform to the delight of the crowd. Click here for details.

From 11 AM to 5 PM join PICTA for a canoe and kayak float. Paddle the river and the canal enjoying the beauty of both. There will be clowns, remote controlled boats, kayak demos, and other activities throughout the day.

Sunday, October 20, 2002 – SCA Locktender’s Open House, 1 to 4 PM
Join SCA & PICTA for the Fall Foliage hike. Listen to Bob Elmer, local teacher and outdoor enthusiast as he points out some of the interesting flora and fauna to all.

Sunday, November 17, 2002 – SCA Locktender’s Open House, 1 to 4 PM
Join Joe Varady, local gemologist and amateur geologist, as he walks the ravine area looking underfoot for fossils

Saturday, December 14, 2002 – Holiday Luminaria, 6 to 9 PM
Join SCA at the Locktender’s House for our annual holiday celebration. Come see one of the most breathtaking sights of the season, hundreds of luminary candles lining the canal bank from Rt. 29 to the Locktender’s House. Enjoy holiday music and partake in some light refreshments as we toast our friends and neighbors with wishes for a safe and happy holiday season. If it rains the Luminaria and Open House is cancelled.

Please be mindful that all of our events are scheduled as outdoor programs. If it does rain the program will most likely be cancelled but the Locktender’s House remains open to visit. We offer a little bit of history, some pleasant company, a sweet cake or fruit and drink to wash it down with.

Visitors of all ages are welcome. We do not charge an admission fee but we do offer items of interest for sale.

As a non-profit organization we do accept tax-deductible donations!
